ECSL Faces Criticism Over Poor Quality Voter ID Card Printing
Ahead of the June 24, 2023 elections, the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has commenced the distribution of voter ID cards. However, several potential voters in the capital city, Freetown, have expressed their disappointment over the poor quality of printing on the cards.
One interviewee, John Kargbo, stated that "the printing on my voter ID card is very faint and blurry. The details on the card are not legible, and it's difficult to read my name and other information. This could cause problems at the polling station when the card is being verified."
Another voter, Aminata Sow, also expressed her concern about the printing quality, stating that "I was shocked when I saw my voter ID card. The printing is so poor that it's hard to identify that this is my picture. This is unacceptable, and I think the Electoral Commission needs to take responsibility and rectify the situation."
On his part, Musa Kamara expressed his fear that the poor printing quality could lead to voter fraud. "If the printing is so poor that it's difficult to verify someone's identity, then it could lead to voter impersonation or other forms of fraud. This could compromise the integrity of the entire election," he said.
Similarly, Hawa Conteh, another interviewee, shared her concern that poor printing could lead to confusion at the polling stations. "If the details on the voter ID cards are not legible, it could lead to confusion among the election officials, and they might not be able to verify the voter's identity. This could cause delays and chaos at the polling stations," she said.
Foday Bangura a civil servant also expressed his disappointment with the Electoral Commission, stating that "the voter ID card is a crucial document for any citizen who wants to exercise their right to vote. The Electoral Commission has a responsibility to ensure that the printing quality is up to par. It's disappointing to see such a lack of attention to detail."
ECSL has promised to hold a press conference next week to address some of the issues.
